The Main Elements of Sustainable Housing

A lot of people would consider getting sustainable housing if such an option was made available to them.  Yet, only a handful of companies specialize in building homes that fully met the definition of ‘sustainable.’

Then there are others that build partially sustainable homes.  They are not as green as homes that are 100% sustainable, but they are still a step in the right direction.

If you would like to start designing sustainable housing, whether partially or fully, take a look at the list below to get a full understanding of what sustainable homes should do.

1. Conserve Energy

The most important function of sustainable housing is to conserve energy.  Homes that are 100% sustainable will be designed to utilize alternative energy sources, such as solar power.

But sometime this type of sustainability is not possible.  If it isn’t the next best solution involves building homes that can hold in heat or cool air when needed.

This lessens the chance that a person would have to use their HVAC unit to stay comfortable.

To achieve this level of partial sustainability, builders can use a special type of design and/or they can use certain types of materials.

An example of the latter is AAC.  This is a type of building material that can be used in place of concrete.  It can help conserve energy because of its cellular structure.

Basically, air gets trapped in its openings, making HVAC units more efficient.  They don’t have to be run as much because the warm or cool air stays around longer.

2. Created from Environmentally-Friendly Materials

Wood tends to be the main material for sustainable homes, since it is natural and doesn’t require factory manufacturing in order to be produced.

But sometimes chemicals have to be used in the building process.  So, to still keep things green, most builders will focus on using chemicals with organic ingredients.

This not only makes the building process more sustainable, but it is also healthier, since workers don’t have to breathe in toxic fumes.

3. Long-Lasting

Sustainable housing must be designed in such a way that it can remain sustainable for the long haul.  In fact, being long-lasting is one of the main points behind sustainability, since this prevents the need from having to take advantage of resources that would be needed by future generations.

In conclusion, there are several components behind sustainable housing.  But each of them are pretty easy to follow, if you take advantage of the right kind of designs and materials.

If you are unsure how to start building sustainability, don’t be afraid to use the Internet or find books on the subject.

If you decide to use the Internet, seek out companies that are already working on sustainable housing projects.

From there you can see if you can find someone to help serve as a mentor or you can take things a step further by subcontracting with them.

You will have to pass the costs onto your client, but at least you can be 100% assured that their sustainable home will be built properly.

Break Through: "From the Death of Environmentalism to the Politics of Possibility"

Environmental insiders Michael Shellenberger and Ted Nordhaus argue that the environmental movement has not evolved with the times and is out of touch with modern American values.

They call for a new aspirational politics that will be capable of tackling our most pressing challenges.

The Politically Incorrect Guide to Global Warming (and Environmentalism)

The big media have spoken on the question of global warming, and the debate is officially over.

"Be afraid, be very afraid," warns Time magazine.

But have Al Gore and his environmentalist allies really proven their case?

The Politically Incorrect Guide to Global Warming (and Environmentalism) provides a provocative, entertaining, and well documented expos of some of the most shamelessly politicized pseudoscience we are likely to see in our relatively cool lifetimes.
