Sustainable Transportation

Cars are responsible for a large amount of the world’s pollution.  This is why more people need to consider using sustainable transport.

What is sustainable transport?  Sustainable transport involves utilizing transportation options that do not emit large amount of carbon dioxide into the air.

The most common sustainable transportation alternatives include: walking, car pooling, public transportation, man-powered vehicles and hybrid cars.

These forms of sustainable transport are explained in greater detail below.

1. Walking

Walking is the cheapest form of sustainable transportation around.  It can also be very healthy, since it helps keep the mind and body in shape.

Of course, in order for it to be the most effective, one must live in an area where their house is close to their job and any stores they might need to go to.

2. Car Pooling

Car pooling is a form of sustainable transportation where people share the use of a vehicle, especially when going to work.

Car pooling can be initiated on a person level or it can be done through a ‘service.’  In case of the latter, the service would link the car poolers to others in their same area.

They may not necessarily go to the same office, but it will still be along the main route.
Cost-wise, it is customary to pitch in for gas.  This may make car-pooling slightly more expensive than public transportation, but it can still be more convenient.

Why?  Well, it can allow people to travel in areas that aren’t normally reached by public transport.

3. Public Transportation

Public transportation is one of the most popular forms of sustainable transportation in an urban area.  It can be utilized through busses, ferries or subway trains.

Basically, it is designed to transport a large number of people at a minimal cost… sometimes it is even free.  It is highly efficient, though sometimes it can used so much that it can be hard to find a seat.

4. Man-Powered Vehicles

Man-powered vehicles can also be used as a form of sustainable transportation.  The most common man-powered vehicle is the bicycle.

Through a bicycle a person can get a good workout while being able to travel long distances.  There are also ‘novelty’ man-powered vehicles being created.

One example is the Buscycle.  This vehicle truly shows how innovative sustainable transport can be.  Designed to hold 15 passengers, the Buscycle runs solely on the pedaling power.

A driver at the front of the vehicle is used for navigation.

5. Hybrid Cars

Finally, hybrid cars can be used for sustainable transport.  What is a hybrid car?  A hybrid car is a vehicle that is designed to fully or partially utilize renewable energy.

The most popular ones tend to use a mixture of gas and electricity.  But there are also those that can run solely on electricity or other sources of fuel, such as solar power.

In conclusion, think about using sustainable transport the next time you need to go somewhere.

By doing so you not only save on gas, but you would also be contributing to the health of the environment, a benefit that is priceless.

Break Through: "From the Death of Environmentalism to the Politics of Possibility"

Environmental insiders Michael Shellenberger and Ted Nordhaus argue that the environmental movement has not evolved with the times and is out of touch with modern American values.

They call for a new aspirational politics that will be capable of tackling our most pressing challenges.

The Politically Incorrect Guide to Global Warming (and Environmentalism)

The big media have spoken on the question of global warming, and the debate is officially over.

"Be afraid, be very afraid," warns Time magazine.

But have Al Gore and his environmentalist allies really proven their case?

The Politically Incorrect Guide to Global Warming (and Environmentalism) provides a provocative, entertaining, and well documented expos of some of the most shamelessly politicized pseudoscience we are likely to see in our relatively cool lifetimes.
