Sustainable Tourism Development

Tourism generates a lot of money.  But if it’s not done in a sustainable manner, it can also cause problems both ecologically and culturally.

This is why it is important for the tourism industry to practice sustainable tourism.  What is sustainable tourism?

Sustainable tourism involves creating a rich vacationing experience without sacrificing the environment, culture or economical situation of the area being traveled to.

To achieve the best results from sustainable tourism development, the industry must focus on several key elements.  These elements are discussed in greater detail below.

1. Support the Local Economy

Supporting the local economy is one of the most important steps in sustainable tourism development.  For example, tourists should be encouraged to buy from local shops, and eat from local restaurants.  In fact, doing such things actually adds to their experience, since they get a first-hand look at another country’s culture.

2. Incorporate the Country’s Heritage & Culture into the Vacationing Experience

Non-sustainable tourism often involves creating areas specially designed for Western travelers.  This can make things seem out of place if the country is not Western.

Yet, how can this area of sustainable tourism development be improved, when there are concerns regarding differences in language and cultural behaviors?

Well, it may not be an easy task, but it can be done.  Things can start by how the hotel or resort is structured.  The architecture should match the styles and designs used in that area.

Granted, some companies may not want to make this move because it goes against their branding, but it’s very important if they want to attain sustainable tourism development.

Next, there need to be discussions with the natives of the country… at least those who are also in the tourism industry.

All of the entertainment, food and other elements of the vacationing experience need to match culture.  Additionally, natives should be hired to carry out these tasks.

Finally, there’s the issue of language and cultural differences.  Well, very little can be done in terms of language.

Tourists can be encouraged to learn a few words to get around, but it’s unrealistic to expect them to not speak their main language.

But culturally, tourists can make amends, even if they are at the hotel or resort.  Of course, things will still have to be within reason.

3. Preserve the Environment

The final concern when it comes to sustainable tourism development involves preserving the environment.  The industry cannot take a way from a country’s natural resources to build their hotels or resorts.

They must also take caution with excursions.

This is because too many excursions can upset the soil, which can destroy the area’s ecology.  The industry can try to circumvent this problem by only taking a handful of tourists on a limited number of excursions.

In conclusion, sustainable tourism benefits everyone because not only does it protect a nation’s heritage, but it also ensures that the environment doesn’t get ruined.

Additionally, it can allow travelers to get a purer vacation experience, since they would be encouraged to interact more directly with the culture.

Break Through: "From the Death of Environmentalism to the Politics of Possibility"

Environmental insiders Michael Shellenberger and Ted Nordhaus argue that the environmental movement has not evolved with the times and is out of touch with modern American values.

They call for a new aspirational politics that will be capable of tackling our most pressing challenges.

The Politically Incorrect Guide to Global Warming (and Environmentalism)

The big media have spoken on the question of global warming, and the debate is officially over.

"Be afraid, be very afraid," warns Time magazine.

But have Al Gore and his environmentalist allies really proven their case?

The Politically Incorrect Guide to Global Warming (and Environmentalism) provides a provocative, entertaining, and well documented expos of some of the most shamelessly politicized pseudoscience we are likely to see in our relatively cool lifetimes.
