Sustainable IT

When it comes to the green movement, sometimes the importance of sustainable technology gets forgotten.

But in actuality sustainable technology is just as important for saving the environment as sustainable agriculture or building.

This is especially the case when it comes to utilizing sustainable IT practices.
What is sustainable IT?

Sustainable IT refers to how an individual or a company can conserve when going about their daily computing tasks.

To initiate sustainable IT, one must do the following: conserve their computer’s power, recycle old computers and use sustainable supplies.  Additional information about these tasks is provided below.

1. Conserving Power

As sustainable technology improves, more energy-efficient computers are being created.  If you want to make sure you are fully utilizing sustainable IT, you will want to make sure you buy a computer that has the Energy Star logo.

Or, alternatively, you can also purchase a computer that is specially designed for sustainability.  An example is the EcoSystem, a machine featured by Jinglehorse.

It is designed to run like a Pentium 4 except it uses less energy.  It only uses 75 watts of electricity while it is in use.  Price-wise, it is very affordable, costing only $895.

If you don’t want to buy a new system, you can still use sustainable IT on your existing system.  To do this you will have to buy special power cables and/or change the settings on your machine.

If you need help in this process you can use iYogi to help you.  For a nominal fee, they will adjust your computer to make it fully sustainable.

2. Recycling Old Computers

Recycling old computers is an essential step for sustainable IT.  Why?  Well, remember computers are not biodegradable.  So, they pose a problem if they are thrown away like regular garbage.

Not only do they take up space, but they also leak toxic chemicals.  These chemicals can leak into the groundwater, which can make people sick.

This is why it is important to recycle, sell or donate all of your old computers.  If you decide to recycle them, sustainable technology can be used to place their parts into newer computers.

If you sell them you can give a person an opportunity to use a computer at a meager price.  And donation allows poorer individuals access to the IT world.

3. Use Sustainable Supplies

Finally, in order to utilize sustainable IT, you must take advantage of green computing supplies.  An example is recycled printing paper.

You can also use recycled ink cartridges.  They work just like new ink cartridges, except that the holder has already been used.

You can contribute to this growing trend by donating your ink cartridges when you’re finished using them.  Alternatively, you can also opt to insert the ink yourself.

Granted, this process can be messy and cumbersome, but if you can get the hang of it you can save money while using sustainable IT.

In conclusion, computer use plays a vital role when it comes to sustainable technology.  If you want to make sure you’re computing in the greenest manner, make sure to follow the suggestions offered in this article.

Break Through: "From the Death of Environmentalism to the Politics of Possibility"

The Politically Incorrect Guide to Global Warming (and Environmentalism)

The big media have spoken on the question of global warming, and the debate is officially over.

"Be afraid, be very afraid," warns Time magazine.

But have Al Gore and his environmentalist allies really proven their case?

The Politically Incorrect Guide to Global Warming (and Environmentalism) provides a provocative, entertaining, and well documented expos of some of the most shamelessly politicized pseudoscience we are likely to see in our relatively cool lifetimes.
