Sustainable Human Development
Often when it comes to sustainability, great emphasis is
placed on the environmental aspect. Yet, to be completely
sustainable, the human factor must also be
considered.
To do this, individuals, organizations and government must
participate in sustainable human development.

development? Simply defined, sustainable human
development is the process of ensuring that all people can
attain a high standard of living without sacrificing another
individual or nation’s standard of living.
To start the process of human development, it is important
to: limit population growth, ensure peoples’ medical needs are
taken care of and provide individuals the tools for economic
independence.
You can learn more about these factors by taking a look at
the information below.
Limiting Population Growth
The first step in sustainable human development involves
limiting population growth. Doing this helps ensure there
is a sustainable earth population. How does a sustainable
earth population differ from a non-sustainable one?
Well, a sustainable earth population is able to live
comfortably with the resources nature provides. But if a
population is not sustainable, especially in certain areas,
there could be problems with food and/or water
supply.

sustainable earth population while ensuring individuals still
possess their personal freedoms? It is going to have to
be in the form of public awareness campaigns about the
importance of birth control and only having as many children as
you can afford.
And, for poorer individuals, the government must make birth
control and other contraceptives easily available free of
charge.
Another method of developing a sustainable earth population
could involve encouraging people to live in sparse areas.
This will help limit population growth in urban areas, where
sprawl can occur very quickly.
Ensuring People’s Medical Needs are Taken Care
of
Population control isn’t the only key for developing a
sustainable earth population. In order to make sure there
are even humans around, medical needs need to be tended
to. Nations that provide for free healthcare are taking
an excellent step toward sustainable human
development.
Granted, their population usually has to make up for it
through taxes, but it’s still a good arrangement. The
United States is very behind in this area, only offering ‘free’
healthcare for its poorest citizens.
Middle and even upper-class individuals should also have
access to free healthcare, since private insurance doesn’t
always cover the costs.
Of course, private insurance can still be available for
those that want first-class care, but there at least needs to
be an option for another alternative.
Providing the Tools for Economic
Independence
Finally, in order to acquire sustainable human development,
societies must provide their people the tools for economic
independence.
Most modernized cultures do this on some level by providing
free elementary and high school education for children and
teenagers. This helps give people enough skills to get
basic employment, but often it isn’t enough… at least if one
wants to get a better job.
Yet, does that mean more money should be dished out for
college education? To an extent yes, especially if there
aren’t enough workers in essential fields.
This helps attain sustainability on all levels, since the
individual gets the job, while society gets workers for jobs
that are required for its functioning.
However, college can only take a person so far.
Emphasis should also be placed on how people can create more
economic stability by creating their own businesses.
Such skills should be taught in high school. Of
course, a person doesn’t have to use it if they want
traditional employment.
But for those that can’t afford college or feel that
academia isn’t for them, at least they have the tools available
for making a lot of money on their own.
