The Concepts of Sustainable Development in the Shipping Industry

Shipping can use a lot of resources, whether it’s electricity to fuel vessels or building materials to create them.

Yet, the shipping industry is not exempt from utilizing the concepts of sustainable development.

To understand why, continue reading as this article will explain how the shipping industry can still maintain a good level of business while operating in a greener, more sustainable manner.

1. Sustainable Port Development

Sustainable port development can be attained in the energy that is supplied to run everything.  Increasing technology can aide in sustainable port development by allowing energy to be produced from just a handful of generators.

Sweden is an example of a country implementing such solutions for their sustainable port development.  As a result a lesser amount of gas from diesel fuel gets released into the air.

It also reduces noise pollution, an additional concern for proper sustainable port development.

2. The Building Process

Architecture is one of the key concepts of sustainable development.  Many think it can only apply for inland buildings, but it can also apply for vessel creation.

Builders must concentrate on using earth-friendly materials, including those that are recycled and those that aren’t chemical-based.

The inner design of a vessel can also utilize the concepts of sustainable development, since many vessels must use a certain amount of energy for passenger or worker comfort.

In this situation builders can use high-grade materials that do a better job of holding in air.  This minimizes the need for having to use even more energy for heating or air conditioning.

3. Worker and/or Passenger Behavior

Sometimes people think that because they’re at sea there’s not as much of a concern to throw trash overboard.

But when this happens, the ocean’s ecology could become negatively affected, killing marine life.  This is why one of the concepts of sustainable development involves making sure workers and passengers do their part when it comes to living green while onboard.

All trash and recyclable items need to be thrown in their proper receptacles.

4. Practice Sustainable Fishing

Finally, for those who fish in the shipping industry, they need to adhere to the concepts of sustainable development in that practice.

This means that no overfishing needs to be done.  Additionally, caution should be had to prevent bycatching, which is something that kills marine life that weren’t even intended to be caught.

In conclusion, these four simple steps are the grounds behind the concepts of sustainable development at sea.  It doesn’t take much to follow them, though non-sustainable companies in the industry may still feel that they are a ‘sacrifice.’

Yes, they may require additional foresight and planning, but isn’t it worth it to help preserve the environment and the ecology of the ocean?

Any perceived inconvenience doesn’t outweigh the overall payoff, which is not only beneficial to the Earth, but also for human beings as well.

All in all when the concepts of sustainable developments are applied to the shipping industry, everyone wins, which is why more need to take advantage of it.

Break Through: "From the Death of Environmentalism to the Politics of Possibility"

Environmental insiders Michael Shellenberger and Ted Nordhaus argue that the environmental movement has not evolved with the times and is out of touch with modern American values.

They call for a new aspirational politics that will be capable of tackling our most pressing challenges.

The Politically Incorrect Guide to Global Warming (and Environmentalism)

The big media have spoken on the question of global warming, and the debate is officially over.

"Be afraid, be very afraid," warns Time magazine.

But have Al Gore and his environmentalist allies really proven their case?

The Politically Incorrect Guide to Global Warming (and Environmentalism) provides a provocative, entertaining, and well documented expos of some of the most shamelessly politicized pseudoscience we are likely to see in our relatively cool lifetimes.
